Acoustic stapedius reflexes were examined in 83 ears with sensorineural hearing loss, in whom the etiology had not yet been confirmed. The results showed a remarkable difference between those with hearing deterioration and those who recovered. Pathological reflexes (e. g. a high reflex threshold, no reflex, or decay of reflex) were found in 16 of 20 ears (80%), especially in those with hearing deterioration. Absence of a tumor of the cerebellopontine angle was confirmed by separate audiological examinations. None of the 6 who recovered their hearing showed pathological reflexes. The relationship between the site of the lesion and the prognosis in patients with sensorineural hearing loss is discussed.
