Incidence of the occupational cervicobrachial disorder (OCD) in different occupations in Japan from a historical point of view was investigated. The disorder first appeared among key-punch operators as mechanization was introduced in office work. Patients suffering from OCD were then recognized in various other occupatoins including typing work, telephone service work, checkout work, nursery work, and assembly line work using conveyor-belt production lines. It was shown that incidence of OCD was associated not only with mechanization of work but also with nonmechanized work. As stress-causing factors relevent to occurrence of OCD, poor ergonomic design of furniture and machines, insufficient rest breaks, and long continuous working time could be mentioned.
