Magnetic Circular Dichroism of Polycrystalline (Mn<SUB>1-x</SUB>Cr<SUB>x</SUB>) <SUB>Pt3</SUB> and Epitaxial CrPt<SUB>3</SUB> Alloy Films

Magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) spectra were measured for sputter-deposited Mn<SUB>1-x</SUB>Cr<SUB>x</SUB>Pt<SUB>3</SUB> and MBE-grow CrPt<SUB>3</SUB> films. Applying the magneto-optical sum rules, it was found that the moment ratio <<I>L</I><SUB>z</SUB>> / 2 <<I>S</I><SUB>z</SUB>> of Cr is very large compared with that of Mn. The moment ratios for Cr and Mn are almost independent of the composition x. In the CrPt<SUB>3</SUB> filmgrown epitaxially on MgO (111) substrate, the orbital moment was found to be small compared to that of the polycrystalline films. A close relationship was foundbetween the perpendicular magnetic anisotrop and the orbital moment.
