The results of 77 operative repairs of tears of the rotator cuff in 72 patients are reviewed retrospectively; the mean follow-up was 6.4 years. Seventy-five patients presented with symptoms of persistent pain and fifty patients with loss of movement. Results were assessed in terms of pain, function, ROM, stability of the shoulder joint and roentgenogram. Overall, a good result in terms of relief of pain was achieved in 70 shoulders. Restoration of movement and function was less achieved than relief of pain. The complications and failures are discussed.
