Fractures with a Separated Distal Tibial Epiphysis. A Report of Three Cases.

A fracture with a separated distal tibial epiphysis has been recognised as an uncommon fracture in patients between the ages of 12 and 14 years, but recently it has been on the increase. We will report here three cases of this fracture.The first case (a 14-year-old boy) tripped on a soccer ball. He was diagnosed as a Salter-Harris (S-H) Type-II showing a distal tibial epiphyseal fracture by X-rays. Open reduction was performed using a Kirschner wire, because closed reduction had failed. The second case (an 11-year-old girl) fell from a one meter height. Colsed reduction was performed. Ten months later, X-rays showed an early closed growth plate and a slightly valgus deformity, which was diagnosed as an S-H Type-V. The third case (a 5 -year-old boy) fell from a swing. He was diagnosed as an S-H Type II. The X-rays showed a distal tibial epiphseal fracture.
