Indication of Patellectomy in the Elderly.

We carried out a patellectomy in an 80-year old patient who complained of right patello-femoral joint pain when she walked.She started to walk with partial weight bearing and actively carried out range of motion exeruses 1 week postoperahuely and passively 5 weeks postoperatively. Due to this her gait pain was relieved and the range of motion of her right knee was well preserved.Loss of strength in her quadriceps muscle was only slightly and she could extend her knee to -10°, with an extension lag of 10°. She had no difficulty in her daily living activities.Patellectomy therefore appeart to be a good procedure for osteoarthritis localized in the patellofemoral joint in elderly patients.
