Relationship between anterior cruciate ligament injury and posterior tilt angle of tibia, flexion and extension force of knee and joint laxity.

Ninety-five cases (54 male and 41 female) with anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries were reviewed. 70% of male and 85% of female ACL injuries were caused by sports with 20 of 41 females (49%) injured during basketball. In this group with ACL injury, posterior tilt angle (PTA) of the tibia, flexion and extension (F/E) strength ratio of the contralateral knee and general joint laxity were measured and were compared with those of the control (41 male and 122 female). The group with ACL injuries had a steeper PTA than the control (p<0.01). F/E strength ratio of knee joint was lower in the female ACL injury group than in the control (p<0.01). The female ACL injury group had a higher score for joint laxity than the control female basketball player group (p<0.05). PTA, F/E strength ratio, joint laxity were considered as risk factors of ACL injury. The number of risk factors found in females with ACL injury (mean; 2.2) was more than that found in males with ACL injury (mean; 1.4). Risk factors will have more affect on females than on males to whom external force may have more affect than physical predisposing factors.
