We studied 44 growing hips by magnetic resonance imaging. They included the unaffected side of 34 unilateral dislocated hips and 10 acetabular dysplastic hips. Patients were observed at the age of 3, 6, 12 and 18 months, with serial observations done on 15 children. On T1 weighted images, the epiphysis was of intermediate intensity at 3 months of age. The secondary ossification center appeared around 6 months of age in the epiphysis and was seen as a low intensity area. The size of this area then qrew and became brighter. On the other hand on T2 weighted images, the epiphysis showed various patterns of intensity during the first 6 months of age. The secondary ossification center appeared as a high intensity area in many cases and grew in the same manner as shown on T1 weighted images.Understanding the MRI pattern of the growing hip will aid in recognition of pathological epiphyseal findings in children.
