729 females over 40 years old were studied for bone mineral density of the radius (DEXA method) and X-rays of the spine. The incidence of vertebral fractures increases with age and as the bone mineral density (BMD) decreases. The BMD average with vertebral fractures was significantly low. While the BMD of the distal radius show correlation with vertebral fractures, it cannot serve as the single method for diagnosing osteoporosis.
