The objective of this study is to approach mechanisms and to quantify activated carbon cloth capacities in the removal of hydrogen sulfide present in air. Several parameters affect the H2S adsorption capacity onto activated carbon. These include the physico-chemicals surface characteristics and the operating conditions. Four activated carbon cloths and a granular were used in static experiments for their deodorization abilities against hydrogen sulfide molecule. Different parameters like humidity level, gas qualities and surface properties of the adsorbates have been studied. Hydrogen sulfide adsorption develops chemical reactions. The different by-products from the H2S oxidation have been identified and quantified. Mass balance of sulfur compounds has been realized. The hydrogen sulfide removal was found to be produce mainly by oxidation reaction on fiber surfaces. The oxidation pathways have been determined and depend of operating conditions and surface functional groups present on the fiber surface. S8 production from oxidation reaction would play a catalytic role in H2S removal. The first results in static conditions show high capacity of activated carbon cloth to hydrogen sulfide removal.
