From a model of twist structure, a theory of breaking strength of plied yarns is derived, and the theoretical results are compared with experimental results on normal rayon tire cords. Between the theoretical and experimental results a fairly good coincidence is seen. The theoretical results obtained are : <BR>1) Breaking strength P<SUB>*</SUB> of 2-ply yarn is represented approximately by the following equation, where the twist constant is sufficiently small<BR>P<SUB>*</SUB>=P<SUB>*0</SUB>[1-2π<SUP>2</SUP>N<SUP>2</SUP>R<SUP>2</SUP>-2π<SUP>2</SUP>[1+1/2f<SUB>*</SUB>(df/dε)<SUB>*</SUB>](N-n)<SUP>2</SUP>R<SUP>2</SUP>+…]<BR>where, P<SUB>*0</SUB> is the breaking strength of the plied yarn when plied and single yarn twists are boils equal to zero, f<SUB>*</SUB> is the stress at break of fibres of which the plied yarn is constructed, (df/dε)<SUB>*</SUB> is the gradient near the point at break, of the stress versus strain curve of the fibre, N and n are the plied and single yarn twists respectively, and R is the radius of the cylinder on which the center line of a single yarn may situate.<BR>2) The efficiency of the tire cord, ply twist of which is equal to single yarn twist, is approximately equal to the difference between 100 and the twist shrinkage of the plied yarn.
