The object of this study is to obtain fundamental data for the effective action of the wool opener. The opener gives two actions, breaking and opening the wool assembly. The two actions have been compared theoretically and experimentally to see which of them has greater influence upon the efficiency of the scouring and drying processes. In this article, the influence upon the efficiency of the steeping process, the first stage in scouring, has been studied.<BR>The rate of diffusion of suint by hot water into a wool assembly chosen as a simple model is given by the following equation :<BR>dW/dθ=K'(P<SUB>0</SUB>⁄1−P<SUB>0</SUB>)·1⁄Ι,
