The decrease of the cross-sectional area accompanying the longitudinal extension of a textile fiber has been studied together with its Poisson's ratio.<BR>The results are as follows:<BR>1) A tester based on the principle of air-mirometer makes it possible to record continuously both longitudinal and lateral contractions.<BR>2) With Nylon-gut, an almost constant Poisson ratio of μ=0.385-0.386 is obtainable until the longitudinal strain rises to 11-13%. Beyond that limit, the lateral strain shows another tendency, and Poisson's ratio reaches μ=0.446 at the break.<BR>3) The shift of the yield-point is presumably the cause of unstable variations of lateral vs. longitudial strain diagram.
