To understand the importance of the fire-resistant and fire-retardant properties of carbon-overlaid materials, its carbonization behavior was determined.<BR>The fire resistivity of the GPS-boards at different thicknesses, specific gravities and phenol formaldehyde ratio was tested by a burn through test method. Testing was done in accordance with the Japanese Industrial Standard (JIS A 1321) and the relationship between the fire-resistivity and carbonization behavior at carbonizing temperatures of 400-1400°C for GPS overlaid particleboard and GPS board were discussed.<BR>Results showed that the burn through resistance of 3.0mm GPS board with a density above 0.90 and at different phenol resin ratio was more than 2 hours. GPS 40A board at a thickness of more than 3mm and at board densities ranging from 1.0 to 1.6 g/cm<SUP>3</SUP> showed a flame burn-through resistive property of more than 2 hours. Under a fire tested in accordance with JIS A 1321, the deformation between the non-overlaid particleboard and GPS board did not differ much while carbonized board indicated a higher resistance at elevated temperatures of 400-1400°C. Shrinkage occurred at the particlelayer side of GPS boad while cupping was observed to be high as the carbonizing temperature was increased. Flame built up occurred particleboard immediately after the test has started and a rise in the factor of smoke was observed. For GPS-overlaid particleboard, flame occurred at nearly 4 minutes and the factor of smoke was observed to be at 3-34% against particleboard. GPS-board proved to be an excellent material because it was found not to be susceptible to fire and smoke with a minimum factor of smoke.
