Samples of the surface sediments from 38 stations in the Harima Nada, Seto Inland Sea were palynologically studied in connection with their physical properties.The distribution pattern of pollen grains and spores apparently coincides with the contours of the physical properties of the sediments (percentages of fine particles and water content of the sediments and the specific gravities). In fact, it was observed to be a linear correlation between the logarithmic number of total pollen grains and spores and the percentage of the particles which are larger than ∅6 in size to the total particles. Therefore, it could be considered that the pollen grains and spores behave in a similar fashion as inorganic particles which are smaller than 16μm in diameter, transported and deposited as sedimentary particles under the control of constant flow.Among the pollen grains and spores, some showed the characteristic distribution, thus they seemed to have been determined by the supply route and the inherent buoyancy.
