This essay summarizes research on Japanese electoral politics and discusses issues that deserve further consideration. First, I analyze the work on voting decisions, both deciding whether to vote at all and deciding for whom to cast one's vote. Next, I discuss research on the factors underlying the voting decision, specifically, demographic variables, party identification, issue voting, political trust, retrospective voting, candidate evaluations, personality and post-materialist values, party schema, and characteristics of the voter's environment such as electoral system traits, economic conditions and the mass media. I also summarize the work on specific elections, party support and the electoral system. Finally, I discuss several remaining problems and the agenda for future research.
