Purpose In order to search for the fundamental dimensions, thirty-five words for typical emotions were analyzed by multidimensional scaling (MDS) of Torgerson.
Method The distances for MDS were of two kinds, the one was based on subjective judgment of similarity, while the other was based on a classification experiment.
Results In both MDS, the first dimension was pleasantness-unpleasantness and the second is an opposition between loneliness and wonder in direct judgment, while the latter pole is substituted by anger-dislike complex in classification data. These results were compared with earlier ones by Ekman and Schlosberg.
