STRATEGIES IN ATTAINING CONJUNCTIVE CONCEPT:EXPERIMENT AND SIMULATION

With stimuli consisting of 5 alphabetical letters, processes to attain conjunctive concepts defined by 2 critical letters were studied. The data thus collected, 120 cases, were stratified according to strategies which were inferred from verbal reports of the S on each trial about the basis of guessing as well as from the performance. Two strategies were simulated;<I>S</I>s in G-1 and G-2 retained all the letters in the first positive card and eliminated letters being discovered irrelevant until the 2 critical letters became apparent whereas<I>S</I>s in G-5 always pursued a pair of letters at a time. Two programs were written for the former and 5 programs for the latter, each within the respective groups being different in the manner to process informations in negative cards and also in the load on memory. One of the two and one of the five programs yielded the outputs in good agreement with the results of G-1 and G-2 and the results of G-5 respectively.
