The primary concern of this study was whether handicapped subject's deficiency in text recognition could be attributed to their deficit processing abilities. Another question of interest was whether their deficit text processing could be remedied by experimenter-provided question aids. Experiment 1 showed that recognition failure obtained for handicapped subjects could be ascribed to decrement in their successive processing abilities only when no questions were given. In addition, both handicapped subjects and their MA-matched peers had difficulty in utilizing the macro-structure of story materials. In Experiment 2, where subject's transitive inference among episodic units was required, the relationships between subject's recognition failure and their reduced successive processing ability was evident if backward questions were provided. The results were discussed in terms of subject's processing formats.
