Two experiments were conducted to investigate priming effects on perceptual identification by manipulating the type and the degree of prior processing. Experiment I examined the effects of different types of prior processing such as having subjects read a target word, generate it from a definition, and generate it from orthographically related cues. Significant priming effects were obtained in the generation conditions as well as in the reading condition. This result suggested that not only data-driven processing but also conceptually driven processing may cause priming effects on subsequent identification. In Experiment II, the degree to which a target word was processed was varied in the semantic generation task. Priming effects did not occur in the tip-of-the-tongue (TOT) condition where subjects failed to generate the word name but felt confident of knowing it. This clarified the necessary condition for conceptually driven processing to cause priming effects. These results were also discussed with respect to the types of information which mediated priming effects.
