Accompanied by the world population increase, the global warming influence and the water source pollution, our current concerns are converging on the subject how to secure safe water and ideal water supply in the future. RO/UF/MF membrane separation technology is currently applied to large-scale plants, producing fresh water from seawater and municipal sewage. This is one of the infrastructure development project making great use of nonconventional type of water resource. In this paper, I would like to introduce our major examples of global seawater desalination plants and municipal sewage reclamation RO plants in Singapore where high-quality water is being produced. Seawater RO desalination technology has become a proven means to develop new water sources due to rapid evolution of membrane performance, improvement of efficiency with high-pressure pumps and progress of energy-recovery device from high remained pressures in concentrate water. In addition, the RO membrane technology contributes greatly to the production of a high-quality water reclaimed from municipal sewerage water. It is also highly expected that by the future arid climate in coastal urban areas, the new water system with combining sewage reclamation process and seawater desalination process will become a main stream in the water resource development since constructions of new artificial water circulation systems will be required to contribute to further energy conservation and environmentally friendly resource use.
