It is well known that the asymmetry of a membrane structure is closely related to its functions. In the asymmetric membrane with respect to the membrane charge distribution, facilitated and reverse transport of electrolytes were theoretically predicted and the reverse transport of NaCl through the asymmetric membrane was observed experimentally. The object of this article is to make clear the mechanism of membrane functions resulted from the asymmetric membrane charge distribution. At first, the effect of the asymmetric membrane charge distribution on the membrane potential is described. In addition, the way to determine the values of parameters which characterize the membrane properties is shown. Next, the mechanism of the facilitated and the reverse transport of electrolytes is described correlating with the membrane potential. Finally, it is shown that the facilitated and the reverse transport can not take place in a composite membrane formed by piled up two symmetric membranes which differ one another in membrane charge density.
