In the previous studies made on pulmonary tuberculous patients admitted to Kanagawa National Sanatorium during the year 1963, it was revealed that the extent of lesions became more advanced and the prevalence of drug resistance became higher than those observed in the previous years in the author's sanatorium. The fact suggests that the treatment of newly admitted patients became more difficult and complicated. In order to clarify the factors influencing the curability of patients, the results of treatment were followed up among patients newly admitted to the author's sanatorium in 1961 and 1963, and the number of cases was 266and 258, respectively. The a v erage age of patients in 1963 was higher than that in 1961. Among cases with bilateral cavity, the average period of hospitalization became longer in 1963 than that in 1961. The prevalence of primary drug resistance was 15% and 23%, respectively, in 1961 and 1963, and the prevalence of resistance to primary drugs among previously treated cases was 65% and 72%, respectively, in 1961 and 1963. The rate of cases failed to respond to chemotherapy using primary drugs and/or surgical treatment was higher among previously treated cases, sputum positive cases on admission and bilateral cavitary cases than among previously untreated cases, sputum negative cases and non-cavitary or unilateral cavitary cases. The results of treatment using secondary drugs and further surgical treatment for cases failed to respond to primary chemotherapy and/or surgical treatment were followed up. It was revealed that the results were poor among cases with at least one of the following six factors; namely, on admission, far advanced lesions, bilateral sclerotic-walled cavity and %VC less than 50, and at the time of last observation, drug resistance to three or more drugs, positive sputum and presence of complication. The more the number of above mentioned factors existing in one case, the worse the results of treatment. The number of cases with at least one of t h e above mentioned factors increased in 1963, and the results of treatment including secondary drugs and pneumonectomy became worse in 1963. All these facts show that the curability of pulmonary tuberculous patients admitted to the author's sanatorium has become worse in the recent years.
