The prognosis of pulmonary tuberculosis patients might be simply and well expressed by the survival rate and the mortality rate. As it was discussed in the Report II of this paper, the mortality rate from tuberculosis among tuberculosis patients is reliable at least in Japan, and the mortality rate was further divided into the mortality rates from tuberculosis and that from non-tuberculous diseases. The survival rate and the mortality rate from tuberculosis as well as from non-tuberculous diseases were calculated for pulmonary tuberculosis patients found in the previous tuberculosis prevalence surveys in 1953, 1958 and 1963 according to sex, age groups, the extent of pulmonary lesions and the bacteriologic status. The results were summarized as follows: 1) No marked difference was found in the prognosis of patients by sex. 2) Observing by the age group, the proportion of non-tuberculous death showed increase in the age groups over 45, and in the age groups over 60, two thirds to three fourth of the whole death were occupied by non-tuberculous death. The proportion of non-tuberculous death has been increasing in recent years. 3) The more extensive the pulmonary lesions, the higher the mortality rate. The majority of death among far advanced cases was occupied by tuberculosis, while the majority of death among minimal cases was occupied by non-tuberculous diseases. 4) The prognosis of pulmonary tuberculosis with the same extent of lesions was compared between bacilli positive and negative cases, and the former was clearly worse than the latter. The results show that age, the extent of pulmonary lesions and bacteriologic status plays an important role in the prognosis of pulmonary tuberculosis patients.
