A new type of electrostatic probe has been developed which is considered to be most powerful for measuring instantaneous parameters in time varying plasmas.
One common feature of all types of the electostatic probes which have been developed so far, such as the Langmuir single and double probes and the high-frequency resonance probe, is that they always need the sweep of the probe voltage or frequency to obtain the probe characteristics from which plasma parameters are deduced. This implies that it takes a certain time for the determination of plasma parameters and it is not applicable in a strict sense for the diagnosis of the rapidly changing plasma phenomena.
The “triple probes” proposed here dosen't need any sweep, and can determine the instantaneous values of the electron temperature Te as well as the ion saturation current Ji simply by measuring the instantaneous currents flowing into two of the three probes.
According to the operating principle of the triple probes, it is found that the method could he applied to the diagnosis not only of time-dependent non-magnetoplasmas such as pulse discharges and after-glows, but also of magnetoplasmas and plasma oscillations.
