The effect of occlusal alteration on the hyaluroic acid (HA) quantity in the synovial fluid of the monkey temporomandibular joint (TMJ) has been studied.
At intervals of 3 days, 1, 6 and 16 weeks following experimental procedure, unilateral bite raising using metal splint, quantitative changes of HA were assayed biochemically by isotachophoresis.
The quantity of HA in normal synovial fluid from each control animals was 3.97mg/ml. The quantity of HA decreased in synovial fluid 3 days or 1 week after experimental procedure, but it tended to restore to relatively normal limits 16 weeks after experimental procedure.
These restoer suggest that TMJ disturbance of the monkey caused by occlusal alteration was followed by quantiative changes of HA in the synovial fluid.
