A new apparatus was developed to observe the “cutting energy for unit cutted surface area” for filled rubber compounds.A cylindrical body with a sharp rezor at the end moved horizontally at constant speed, collided to a testpiece, made a cut and rebounded with a constant speed which was reduced by an inelastic collision. The kinetic energy loss E due to a collision was obtained by measuring the speeds of the body before and after collision.Defining the cutted area as Ac, cutting resistance of the material might be expressed by AE/aAc. This energy loss E. however, includes histeresis energy loss due to the deformation of the rubber in addition to the net cutting energy.To subtract this histeresis loss, the sharp edge of the rezor was slightly blunt so that no cut was made. The same collision experiment was done and the energy loss was defined as E in this case.The measured values of aE/aAc were nearly the same as those observed by tear energy T by a trouser type method used by Starcer et al4), and showed temperture dependancy in the rubbery region.a (E-E) /aAc, however were smaller than aE/aAc and did not show clear temperature dependancy within a range of temperature observed (-40-160°C).
