Hydrocarbons, wax esters and free fatty acids in the wax-shell lipids of Ceroplastes rubens, C. japonicas and C. pseudoceriferus were analyzed by gas-liquid chromatography. The saturated hydrocarbons were composed of two principal components, C29 and C31; they also contained many compounds with 14 to 38 carbon atoms. The major constituents of alcohols and acids from the saturated wax esters were C26- and C28-alcohols common in the three species, C30- and C32-acids in C. rubens; C16-, C18-, C20- and C34-acids in C. japonicus; and C16- and C18-acids in C. pseudoceriferus. The major constituents of alcohols and acids from the unsaturated wax esters were C26-alcohol and/or unidentified unsaturated alcohols (probably cyclic) in the three species, C32- and C34-acids in C. rubens; C28-, C30-acids and oleic acid in C. japonicus; and C30-, C32-acids, oleic and linoleic acids in C. pseudoceriferus. The free fatty acid fractions in the three species were made up mainly of C30- and C32-acids.
