An amino-acid diet for the silkworm, Bombyx mori L., was formulated (Table I), on which the rearing from egg to pupa was succeeded. The diet was agar-based, which contained starch, amino acids (Table II), oil, sterol, salts, ascorbic acid, cellulose powder, and B vitamins. A small amount of morin and mulberry leaf fraction was added in order to stimulate larval feeding. Sorbic acid was added to retard growth of fungi. The rearing was started with 40 newly hatched larvae. The larvae showed a fairly good growth until the end of the fourth instar, and only one larva out of forty died in the fourth instar (Tables III and IV). There was also another larva showing a sign of the five-molter, which was omitted from the experiment, when it reached the fourth molting. Growth during the fifth instar was, however rather reduced. Although 38 larvae attained the maturity at the end of the fifth instar, only five larvae started spinning. Several larvae became pupae without spinning, but eventually died. This is the first report of rearing of Bombyx larvae entirely on an amino-acid diet.
