When fructose was fermented by G. roseus, an unhnown substance, which gave purple colour with ferric chloride, was produced beside kojic acid and dihydroxyacetone (glycerinaldehyde). This was purified by lead acetate precipitation and ethyl acetate extraction, and compared with synthetic oxymethylglyoxal, reductone (enol form of oxymethylglyoxal), and oxypyruvic acid. Then the author concluded this was most likely to be EULERs reductone and discussed the relationship with the production of kojic acid and glycolic acid by the same bacteria.
