Thymidine kinase (TK) is the key enzyme in the salvage pathway for DNA synthesis. Elevated serum TK levels have been associated with increased tumor cell proliferative activity in patients with a wide range of different malignancies. We have evaluated plasma TK levels during the follow-up of seven patients with mycosis fungoides. TK levels were increased in advanced stages in comparison with earlier ones. TK levels decreased in patients who responded to treatment but increased in those who had relapses and those with progressive disease. These results indicate that plasma TK could be used both as a prognostic marker and to monitor the effect of therapy in patients with mycosis fungoides.
