In the western part of Sendai City the author studied the structure of the river terraces (hitherto called by R. Tayama 1936 and the followers) and found the existence of a gently sloping erosion surface. He has named it the Jutokuji Surface, and the river terrace developing in front of it the Kotodai Surface. The Jutokuji Surface is perhaps a cryopediment (T. Wako 1964) with its formation accelerated by upheaval of land to the west, the presumption being supported by a C-14 datum. The Jutokuji Surface and the Kotodai Surface correspond roughly to the river terrace ha and IIb by R. Tayama (1936) respectively.
