Geographical selectivity of migration flow can be measured by various indices. The preference index of migration is one type of such indices. As commuting is a kind of migrations the preference index can be applied to measure the geographical selectivity of commuting flow. In this paper, the preference index of migration is applied to the measurement of selectivity in commuting, daily movement of employed persons and school persons, from the place (shi, machi and mura) of their residence to the place (shi, machi and mura) of their work or school, and vice versa, within Miyagi Prefecture.Through the measurement and its analysis the following findings are obtained:(1) The places having the inflow reference index of 100 and over, which means the observed in-commuters are more than the expected, are found only in cities with high centrality in this prefecture.(2) The places having the outflow preference index of 100 and over, which means the observed out-commuters are more than the expected, are recognized in the places contiguous to the cities with high centrality.(3) Every place recieves more in-commuters than expected in proportion to its population from a place at least.(4) The area comprised of the places of 100 and over in inflow preference index to a certain city is regarded as the commuting area to the city. It is noticeable that Furukawa, a local city in Miyagi Prefecture, has the most places as its commuting area, exceeding Sendai, the prefectural and national leading major city.(5) The 1970 preference indices show declining tendency, in spite of the rising tendency in rates of in- and out-commuters, compared with those of 1964. However, the boundaries of commuting areas hardly change between 1965 and 1970.(6) Generalizing above findings, the commuting flow has high selectivity directing to a specific area, which may be explained by “distance” factor. The farther the distance from a city is, the more the selectivity of outflow commuting declined in the fashion of exponential function: y=ae-bx(7) By using the above equation, the theoretical limit of a commuting area is calculated 20 to 30km from each city, without exception, in Miyagi Prefecture.
