The measured diametral interference between hole and shaft may be expressed as the sum of three terms : macroscopic interference (due to elastic or plastic strain of hole and shaft), microscopic interference (due to plastic deformation of the metal occuring at the points of contact), unavailable interference (in the region of which the summits of the irregularities of two metal surfaces do not touch statistically), and applying our theory of the mechanism of contact between metal surfaces the theoretical expression for each interference is deduced. In this way it is possible to discuss the relationships between the diametral interference and the surface roughness.
