This paper is concerned with an analysis of stress intensity factor for a partial semi-elliptic crack perpendicularly emanating from the surface of a shaft subjected to uniform tension. In the analysis, the influence of Poissons ratio on stress intensity factor is considered. The analysis is based on the body force method. According to the results, the stress intensity factor is larger than that for a similar shape crack of a semi-infinite body, excepting the case where the both b/a and b/r are small. The effect of Poissons ratio on the stress intensity factor of a shaft is more than that of a semi-infinite body.
