To construct the phase diagram of the 1-hexadecanesulfonic acid-water system for a concentration of as much as 160 mmol dm-3, the acid solutions were examined visually as well as by UV absorbance, electric conductivity, viscosity, and differential scanning calorimetry. The gel-sol phase transition was observed above 1 mmol dm-3, and the gel-coagel phase transition was observed from 1 to 60 mmol dm-3. From the solutions above 60 mmol dm-3 the gel phase is formed mainly on cooling. The gel-sol transition was found to depend very much on the amount of excess hydrochloric acid. Larger aggregates were found present in the solution above 2.5 mmol dm-3 and above the gel-sol transition temperature.
