The vacuum fusion method has been most widely used for determining oxygen in metals. To apply the method to a routine analysis of titanium, however, it is necessary to simplify the apparatus and to select a bath having an excellent reliability. In this report, a method for the determination of oxygen in titanium using a proper apparatus having an iron-tin bath is presented.<BR>The titanium sample is taken, with tin weighing two times of the sample, into a graphite crucible filled with molten iron containing 1530% of tin in weight. Consequently, oxygen can be determined in good reproducibility without the insufficient extraction of gas which may be resulted from the solidification of bath caused by the existence of excess carbon. Using the presented iron-tin bath, and keeping titanium-bath weight ratio below 1.0% and gas extraction temperature at 18001850°C, 35 samples for a set of apparatus gave satisfactory analytical values. The reproducibility of the method was 4.1% as standard deviation, and the time required was 170 minutes, per sample.
