As the color reaction agent for aromatic primary amines, p-dimethylaminobenzaldehyde (DAB) has been used heretofore in many cases. It was found by the authors that the reaction using p-dimethylaminocinnamaldehyde (DAC) in met hanol with an addition of trichloroacetic acid gave a more sensitive and deeper coloration. Coloration by the DAB was almost yellow, while the coloration by the DAC was characteristic red in case of aromatic primary amine and bluepurple in case of aromatic secondary amine.
Studies on various aromatic primary amines indicated that the DAC method was suitable for the micro-determination.
Also, aromatic secondary amines gave good coloration in methanol with DAC and sulfuric acid.
