A colorimetric determination of Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> by dithizone method in the presence of large amount of Cl<SUP>-</SUP> has been investigated. The presence of Cl<SUP>-</SUP> had no effect on the extraction of Hg<SUP>++</SUP> by dithizone-carbon tetrachloride solution having the pH above 2. Masking of Zn<SUP>2+</SUP>, Cd<SUP>2+</SUP>, Pb<SUP>2+</SUP>, etc. and less than 1mg Cu<SUP>2+</SUP> is possible by use of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or above 1 mg Cu<SUP>2+</SUP> by 1, 2- diaminocyclohexane-N, N. N, N-tetraacetic acid, respectively. Oxidative substances such as Cl<SUB>2</SUB>and ClO<SUP>-</SUP> can be removed by the treatment with SO<SUB>3</SUB><SUP>2-</SUP>. It is possible to determine 125 γ Hg<SUP>2+</SUP>/10 <I>ml</I> CCl<SUB>4</SUB> by this method. From the result of extraction of Hg<SUP>2+</SUP> by dithizone method in the presence of Cl<SUP>-</SUP> and I<SUP>-</SUP>, a coefficient of extraction, log K = 26. 79, of Hg-dithizone salt was obtained. An equilibrium relation of "enolized" Hg-dithizone salt has been investigated and found that this complex salt was considerably stabilized at around pH 57.
