An experimental set-up has been described for determining the ultrasonic velocity and absorption in liquid by means of optical beating technique, and the instrumental characteristics on ultrasonic frequency and velocity have been estimated with both experiment and calculation. It has been shown that the technique is also available for velocity measurement from 20 MHz to 100 MHz.<BR>This technique and Brillouin scattering have been applied for measuring the ultrasonic velocity and absorption of liquid chlorobenzene, and the obtained ultrasonic relaxational mechanism has been discussed with the theories of molecular vibrational relaxation and movable cell model. The results show that the velocity dispersion and absorption are the molecular vibrational relaxation due to all vibrational modes but the lowest mode, and the number of intermolecular collision necessary to effect a deactivation of the C-Cl deformation mode is about 21 at 20°C.
