An application of chemical analysis to small amounts of acetic acid and acetic anhydride in diketene is rather difficult. An attempt has been made by the authors to find a simple and rapid method of determination by the infrared absorption spectroscopy. The key bands used were 7.72μ in wavelength for acetic acid and 8.89μ for acetic anhydride. The absorption spectra were measured in CCl<SUB>4</SUB> solution using NaCl cells of 0.1mm thickness. Less than 5% of acetic acid was determined by the differential method and the base line method, and less than 10% of acetic anhydride was determined by the differential method. The results were tested by Youden's method with the standard values. It has been indicated that this infrared method can be applicable satisfactorily with the standard deviation of 0.060.1%. It is thought to be useful as a routine method.
