Since bismuth forms stable complexes with EDTA, NTA (nitrilotriacetic acid) and other chelating agents in nitric acid solution, the bismuth-complex step can be shifted from the copper step even in the presence of large amount of lead.
The most suitable concentrations of nitric acid and NTA have been sought by the authors for the determination of copper and bismuth.
The influence of interfering elements, e. g., tin and antimony are eliminated by oxidation with a few drops of 1% potassium permanganate. By this method, copper and bismuth in pure lead can be determined directly and simultaneously.
The base solution is composed of 0.1 N HNO3+0.005M NTA+0.04% CMC (sodium carboxymethylcellulose) and the half-wave potentials of copper and bismuth are+ 0.004 V and -0.14 V vs. S. C. E. respectively.
The time required for an analysis is about 1.5 hour.
