A preliminary work on the determination of hafnium in zirconium oxide as reactor material is reported.Main difficulties in spectrochemical analysis of ZrO2 arise from the two factors: one is the unstable volatilization of ZrO2 and the other is the indistinctness of hafnium spectral lines on account of heavy background.DC-arc excitation using a relatively large current that consumes fair amount of sample causes a heavy background owing to continued radiation from solid particles.Besides, the intensity of hafnium ion lines is enfeebled by the lowering of arc temperature effected by low ionization potential of zirconium.Various spectrographic techniques are examined to stabilize the volatilization and suppress the background.Spectroscopic buffer does not sufficiently suppress the background ; introduction of alkali or alkali earth elements seems to depress somewhat the intensity of hafnium lines.Excitation in different atmospheres of oxygen, argon and their mixture is found to be of no advantage to the analysis of hafnium in zirconium oxide.
