The a. c. polarographic behaviors of oxine (8-hydroxyquinoline), oxine-5-sulphonic acid (8-hydroxyquinoline-5-sulphonic acid), ferron (7-iodo-8-hydroxyquinoline) and 2-methyl-oxine (2-methyl-8-hydroxyquinoline) were investigated.
These compounds show two a. c. waves both in the positive potential region of the electrocapillary maximum. The first waves which appear at more positive potential than that of the second waves are considered to be the so-called "transition wave" and the second waves to be the "tensammetric wave".
The second waves reach their maximum height at the characteristic pH range and decrease the height in both pH sides. From the experimental results it was assumed that the neutral species were generally responsible for the appearance of the second waves except ferron, whose acid species also seem to be adsorbed to cause the appearance of the a. c. wave.
The height of the second waves decreases quantitatively by the addition of some metal ions. e. g. copper, cadmium, zinc etc. The fact was utilized for the amperometric determination of the traces of the metals.
