For the purpose of an automatic determination of iodine adsorption number (IAN) of carbon black (CB), the adsorption equilibrium between CB and I<SUB>2</SUB> in 0.33<I>N</I> KI solution was examined, and it was shown that the equilibrium followed Freundlich's equation in diluted solutions of I<SUB>2</SUB> (Fig. 2). A new procedure based on the experimental results was proposed, and an apparatus was constructed of a cell assembly, controlled current source, a potential recorder with null point detecting mechanism and a control circuit (Figs. 6 & 7). The standard solution composed of 10<SUP>-4</SUP><I>N</I> in I<SUB>2</SUB> and 0.33<I>N</I> KI was electrolyzed in the presence of 0.5 g of CB to be examined, and I<SUB>2</SUB> to be adsorbed by the CB was generated coulometrically. At the beginning of electrolysis, I<SUB>2</SUB> concentration in the liquid phase was reduced through the adsorption by CB, however, it was increased gradually with generated I<SUB>2</SUB>. All the while, the concentration of I<SUB>2</SUB> was followed up potentiometrically. Two identical Pt electrodes were used for detecting potential. One of them was immersed in the test solution, and the other in the standard solution contained in a glass tube connected electrically to the test solution with a salt bridge. When I<SUB>2</SUB> concentration in the liquid phase reached 10<SUP>-4</SUP><I>N</I>, the potential between electrodes should be zero. At the point, the electrolysis was ceased temporarily for 30 sec. set in the control circuit, and repeated until no potential difference occured at the Pt electrodes for 30 sec. The coulombs consumed by the electrolysis corresponded to the quantity of I<SUB>2</SUB> adsorbed by the CB that was equilibrated to 10<SUP>-4</SUP><I>N</I> I<SUB>2</SUB> solution. The values measured by the proposed method for 13 species of CB were proportionated to the IAN obtained by ASTM method (Fig. 12). The effect of preset waiting time (Fig. 9), grain size of CB (Fig. 10), electrolytic current (Fig. 11) etc. were also examined.
