For the rapid determination of sodium oxide in cements and their raw materials, a fluorescent X-ray method was applied by using a multichannel vaccumpath analyser equipped with a rhodium X-ray tube, a pulse height analyser and a specially designed gas flow proportional counter. Briquetted sample pressed under 20 t/cm2 showed constant NaKα intensity over the fineness 4000 cm2/g expressed by Blaine specific surface. The reproducibility of measured intensities for a sample was fairly good (σNa2O(%)=0.005), but the signal to noise ratio must be increased by the improvement of apparatus. The standard deviation of analytical results was reduced by the correction for absorption, and a single calibration curve was useful for the determination of sodium oxide in the cements manufactured in the same plant and the raw materials from the same source. Standard deviations (σNa2O%) in these cases were 0.03%, 0.02% and 0.09% for cements, their raw mix and clay, respectively. Though smaller in cements than in raw materials, a mineralogical effect of the sample on the intensity of NaKα could not be eliminated both in cements and their raw materials without using fusion or solution technique. The determination was done in only ten minutes, and the method was useful for quality control in the cement industry.
