The applications of the previously reported solvent extraction separation method in the system of acetyl acetone complexes-carbon tetrachloride to thorium-related samples have been investigated. Sulfuric acid for Korean monazites, sodium peroxide fusion for Malayan xenotimes, and hydrochloric acid for thorium phosphates are conveniently preferred for the sample opening, respectively.<BR>Hydrofluoric acid as a group separating agent of thorium and rare-earths has a great advantage over oxalic acid because of its little solubility losses and the direct dissolution of some insoluble hydrolysis precipitates. The hardness of filtering of the gelatinous fluoride precipitates, which is one of the difficulty in the procedure, can be avoided by evaporating the precipitates to dryness on a steam bath. Oxalic acid as a precipitant should be used separately for thorium and rare-earths. The combined method of some modified group separation with hydrofluoric acid and the proposed solvent extraction separation is recognized to be effective, by which thorium, cerium, and the total rare-earths have been determined in Korean monazite with coefficients of variation of, respectively, 1.7, 0.2, and 0.3%. In addition, the potentiometry with potassium ferrocyanide for cerium analysis is also found to be suitable.
