The spectrochemical analysis of metallic ingredients in waste water has been investigated by rotating praphite electrode-spark excitation technique and a method applicable to routine work has been established for nine elements: Al, As, Cr, Co, Cu, Mg, Mn, Pb and Sn.
It is found that the emission of trace elements necessitates a relatively large discharge energy and the inductance inserted in discharge circuit influences S/N ratio of emitted spectral line. Long presparking time that causes a rough surface of disk and a smooth feeding of sample solution into spark gap gives higher sensitivity and better reproducibility. If the element of internal standard and that for the analysis behave similarly when excited, observed results will be accurate, and in the present work, good results are obtained with indium rather than gold as the internal standard element.
This method is very useful in practice for determination of metals in waste water because of the advantage of minimizing errors due to variety of sample compositions.
