In the synthesis of alkyl cyanoacetate and potassium cyanide, as reported in the preceding paper, the formation of the by-products, cyanosuccinate and cyanotri-carballylate, was difficult to avoid due to the presence of active methylene group in the cyanoacetate. In the present study, however, it has been demonstrated that cyanoacetic acid esters can readily be prepared in good yield through the reaction between sodium monochloroacetate and potassium cyanide with subsequent esterification. The activation evergy value for the cyanation was calculated to be 16.2 Kcal/mol, and essentially no reaction occured between sodium cyanoacetate and potassium cyanide.
