Reaction conditions and mechanisms for the formation of n-butyl vinyl ether from acetaldehyde di-n-butylacetal have been studied. The dealcoholation probably proceeds through thermal decomposition. When the acetal was pyrolyzed at 300°C in the presence of asbestos fillings, 95 mol % conversion with 93 mol % selectivity for the desired vinylether was attained. In contrast, the previously known Pd-asbestos catalyst gave 70 mol % conversion and 80 mol % selectivity under comparable conditions.
